First of all, let me say how lucky I feel to have the vehicles that I have. :giggle:
Now let me mention WA state vehicle registration. Some years back, a citizens initiative was started to reduce license tab fees. The annual tab registration for the typical passenger vehicle was over $100 and climbing. The initiative passed with overwhelming support and the next year tabs were $30 plus tax. Now:

I just registered the used 1998 Honda VFR800:
Initial Registration: $59.00 PLUS 9.6% of Vehicle purchase price (Use Tax)
Filing: $4.50
Title Filing: $5.50
Title Service Fee: $15.00
Original Issue Plate: $4.00
Out of State Vehicle Check: $15.00
Vehicle Title Application: $15.00

Fine but here is the additional License cost, which is annual:
Registration License: $30.00 (OK citizens, happy now?)
Vehicle weight: $25.00 (Hey, this is a motorcycle. There are people heavier than this!)
Tab registration Service fee: $8.00
Plate Reflectivity: $2.00 (This is not an option.)
License Plate Technology: $.25
Dept of Licensing Service: $.50
Emergency Medical Services: $6.50 (Realistically, I should throw a few more $$$ at this.) 👨‍🦳
My $30 plates are now $72.25 if I don't contribute to the state parks or buy another park pass. If you register online, they add this extra stuff in and you have to option out of it before paying (sneaky buggers).

Don't get me started on the annual $100 additional charge on the 10 year old RV. The money goes to pay for the Seattle train system 300 miles away. 🚐 💲💲💲

I feel better now! New reflective plate and 12 month sticker on the Viffer! :)

That amount pales what we pay here in California for our vehicle registration.

For Megas, a 32-year-old motorcycle the registration fees were $125.

Here's the breakdown of the fees:

  • Registration Fee: $113
  • License Fee: $1
  • Weight Fee: $0
  • Special Plate Fee: $0
  • County/District Fee: $11
  • Owner Responsibility Fee: $0
Here's the breakdown of the fees for NaTalie:
  • Registration Fee: $113
  • License Fee: $18
  • Weight Fee: $0
  • Special Plate Fee: $0
  • County/District Fee: $11
  • Owner Responsibility Fee: $0
  • Total Fee: $142
Here's the breakdown of the fees for NaNCy:
  • Registration Fee: $113
  • License Fee: $26
  • Weight Fee: $0
  • Special Plate Fee: $0
  • County/District Fee: $11
  • Owner Responsibility Fee: $0
  • Total Fee: $150
It is the "Registration Fee" that goes up for us every year and is the most significant part of the vehicle registration we pay for as you can see. This amount is consistent across 3 different bikes.

<sigh>. I'm glad I don't live in a state that taxes u to death...

In all fairness, I must say that there is no state income tax in WA. You have to raise revenue somewhere. The problem has been spending vehicle / fuel taxes on other things and having crappy roads.

Stop your whinging you guys.
It cost me AU$682.70 to register the NT a couple of months ago.
That is rego only. Insurance is extra!

In Michigan with any vehicle you must pay $220, for MCCA fee. Best part is if you run off the road and do not contact a vehicle you do not get to use these funds. Then of course there is insurance for you vehicle. So you own 5 vehicles, you pay $220 per vehicle. I have 2 cars (one used for transport in dogs to appointments), a pickup truck, a RV, and 2 motorcycles (one is older then 25 years so the cost is less). All fees are on insurance, so does not include registration fees (RV $450, Truck $200, Cars $300, and motorcycle is $40). Insurance is not included in these fees.

With the current exchange rates, you paid $461 USD for your registration. My 2008 3/4 ton RAM 2500 registration was cheaper than that at $396 USD.

Vehicle costs here are very high compared to there. For example, parts for our NT are more than double and sometimes triple or more than what you pay, even considering the exchange rate. Fuel is expensive here but not as dear as Europe. My 1989 Nissan Ute (pick-up to you) is only a 4 cylinder but costs me more than AU$800 per year for rego.
With your population of more than 327 million you have much higher sales volumes and competition than we have with less than 25 million.

I pay $1.00, yes one dollar, annually for license plate renewal. But I pay 6.5% of the purchase price in Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) when the vehicle is purchased. When our new motor home arrives the first year license plates will be over $8,000.00 USD.

Wayne, wouldn't it be a lot cheaper if you bought a used one from Billy Bob or his cousin Bubba?

I think sales tax (in whatever form) is one of the most fair forms of taxation we have. You spend - you pay.
As mentioned above in this thread we all have taxation in various forms to support our "guvament" and "services" they provide. My son in MN pays 20X more for his license tags than I pay in WI, but I pay more gas tax than he does.

No, then the state assigns a Fair Market Value, usually high Blue Book / Black Book, and charges accordingly. I've never seen a vehicle sell for close to what Georgia's Department of Revenue claims is a fair market value.

Yup, One way or the other they find a way to get into your pocket.
And they always will. Georgia's TAVT came about because folks were complaining about their annual "birthday present" in the form of annual plate renewal fees. Now the state gets all their money upfront and some folks are math challenged enough to think it is a good deal. The TAVT is in theory roughly what the state would have collected in 10 years. Since most folks don't keep a vehicle that long it is a big win for the state.

These are many of the reasons I got a dealer's license. In Kansas we have 6% state sales tax + 3.5% city sales tax +property tax when you renew your tag. I'm a car and motorcycle nut and have lots of each (I have 5 bikes) and setting up the dealership was a pia, but overall it's a win for me. Our little car lot sells about 100-120 cars a year, and I don't have to pay all of the things complained about in this thread.

Jeez.... Georgia is starting to tax like a Yankee state!!

I have heard of stupid fees before, Colorado has a bunch or them but "What the hell is an Owner Responsibility Fee?"

I am not sure what it for. It is listed in the registration fee breakdown. I haven't had to pay any amount to that fee every.

Sorry, I cannot find any information regarding that specific fee.

Interesting that you guys have an EMS fee. Ours in Chelan County was a choice: $5 for the 'Ferry replacement fund" or $5 to your local agent. I have a problem paying for a ferry when there is no ferry on the Columbia. So now I get my tabs from the local bookkeeping service down the street. I think our tabs are up to 68 and change. Except for my Pontiac Vibe, which has Law Enforcement Memorial plates on it.

License for my Yamaha Majesty was $10 (I just paid it yesterday.) My SlingShot will be $20 next year. 92 Mazda truck was $35 and 2017 RAV4 was $297. Not too bad.

Renewal fee for my 2014 FJR here in Arapaho County Colorado is $96.15. Won't know what the break down is until I renew it.
