My Bike's Struggles with Acceleration and Higher Speeds

Macka said: I don't believe that story Phil. I had mine air freighted by Partzilla to Australia. Genuine Honda unit in Honda box.

Sounded goofy to me, too. But, I didn't have to pay for overnight shipment and the pump arrived today. I keep expecting a phone call saying that the bike's ready to pick up, but it hasn't come yet.

Well, it was your denial that the fuel pump was the cause of this issue and lead to taking this long to resolve. If you accepted the simple fact the pump was the root cause of your woes and cracked open your wallet it would have worked out a lot sooner.

You're kinda' right, Bruce. But by the time I took the bike to the dealer, I had decided it was the fuel pump. The mechanic wanted to check other things. And he did.

Ta-Daa!! It's fixed! I'd forgotten how well NTs run when they get all the fuel they need! Smooth, strong, linear acceleration all the way to red-line! $610 and they didn't even charge me rent for the work bench where it sat for 22 days. What a deal!

I wouldn't exactly call it denial. I would say it was more case of uncertainty. Many times it is wise to study the situation, get input from others and weigh your options. That's hardly denial, that's prudence.

Great! It's got smooth, strong, linear acceleration. Runs better than it has in quite a long time!

Just joined the tread: do I understand the filter cannot be purchased and replaced separately or does one have to replace total unit?

Russ, that is correct. I had to replace mine a few weeks after buying the bike. The filter got clogged when I refueled the first empty tank and stirred up some gunk. Bike had been sitting and ran fine until i did that, then the filter got clogged and it would not run when the throttle was opened past idle.

For what it's worth, my pump assembly itself was crumbling due to age. The insulation for the wiring, the flexible pickup hose, and some other plastic items were turning to dust; they broke apart in my hands as i removed the unit. So to me replacing the entire unit every few years will be a maintenance item.

I did think about putting a small 'prefilter' in the pickup line. There is a hose, about 5-6 inches long, that runs from the top down to the bottom of the unit, and it is open on the end. Seems like a small filter could be put inline to help keep the built in one clean, and it could be replaced but would require removing the pump. Not a huge job to do though, couple hours for me the first time.

Here are the part numbers if needed. I replaced the main gasket on the tank, and the retainer clip. The damper was on backorder and mine was fine so I cancelled that, was holding up the whole order.

16700-MEW-D41 PUMP ASSY., FUEL (Honda) $303.14
17574-MEE-000 GASKET, BASE (Honda) $7.61
17711-S0X-931 NLA - RETAINER (Honda) $3.50

16719-MEW-920 DAMPER, CONNECTOR (Honda) $2.05 [cancelled]

Sorry, I wasn't really clear, the filter is part of the unit and the whole thing needs to be replaced. I got the parts from Partzilla, they were the cheapest i found.

I had this problem: my bike would run OK until I opened the throttle much more than halfway, then it would feel as if it was being strangled. I ran some Seafoam through it and it got better for awhile, but then on my way back from Spearfish last June, it wouldn't run over 60-65. It was in the shop for close to three weeks as my mechanic tried to figure out a fix that would cost less than a fuel pump. He finally broke down and tested the pump. It was OK on pressure, but wouldn't flow more than 65cc/10sec. The pump is supposed to flow 200-220cc/10sec. It took a week to get the pump from Honda and replace it, but the bike runs like new now -- even with 131,000 miles on the clock.

If the normal order of things is that, the fuel filter clogs and places excessive strain on the pump, is not an early intervention possible?

Identify the downstream from the filter. At that point, drill and tap a union. At a guess, the housing is made from nylon. Weld a bit of cable tie into the join just to make certain. Attach the union to a flexible pipe. Add an inline filter to that and another bit of pipe to lie in the bottom of the tank.

If you live in a dusty part of the world then use the biggest filter that will fit through the access hole.

I don't know. We have a lot of guys on this forum including me that have old NT's with lots of mileage on them that have never had a fuel pump problem. Not sure I would mess with it. If it ain't broke don't fix it comes to mind.

AFAIK, Phil's fuel pump was an anomaly as he is the only one in the forum that has had a problem.

Mike

My fuel pump is kinda' like my final drive. I'm the only person on Forum who's had two total rebuilds on final drives, AFAIK. I'm just anomalous.

Perhaps you could start a new organization..... Bikers's Anomalous.....

I'm just sayin'...….

Guys, I have some super awesome news for y'all from across the pond ;)

My 2006 nt 700, on nearly 141 k miles today, had been struggling with similar performance issues for a couple of years.
I went through a process of elimination, leaving looking at the pump until last, due to the expense of replacement parts.
Well I finally got to the pump out of the tank, + successfully separated the filter from the pump... It's a little fiddly, but not too difficult. Great news then!
My first wash of the filter was good news, in that it was full of filthy black oily stuff! After about 10 washes I was starting to get clear petrol. It gave it about 20 washes in total, not perfectly clear petrol, but satisfied that a hell of a load of black gunk was gone.
Reassembled fairly easily, but did make one careless mistake so it wouldn't start, took the pump unit out again, fixed what I suspected i had done wrong, refitted, started straight away.
Test ride....excellent results, I have a new bike, great acceleration, reaching 100mph OK, can hit the redline no problem in all gears, I think it does about 110mph in 5th at the redline but didn't go there.

3 days in and all good.. Early days still but I'm confident this will last a while, and at least I know if it starts to lose it again in a few months then perhaps the filter really should have been replaced.
Perhaps I should have renewed the pump itself ( this can be bought separately too, and aftermarket available, the Quantum/HiFlow one sounds good, from California...

)
as that has been under a lot of strain for a couple of years, but I'm happy running as it is to see how it gets on.
Will report back if any of issues reoccur.

Plesse see my thread on the uk forum, and check out the pics in the related gallery.
Edit....Perhaps go straight to my 18 July post on page 2 of that thread, althought the detail of my work up to that point should also be of interest, if you have time!

Pics....

Another one for Anamalous club membership please :)
