Who would have thought that new cars spy on you and rat out out your driving habits to your insurance company? Unless you opt out. GM cars did this and they got their PeePee wacked,,,,hard...but other car companies are getting away with it unless you opt out.

Yeah... the double standards...
Administrations made a big fuss with their Data Protection Act, claiming to protect us from all those mean, evil corporations...
The very same administrations then make things like eCall/OnStar and "accident data recorder" mandatory (also demand full access to all ISP servers and chat apps while at it)... pfffff...

And there is no "opt out", even if you grab a wire cutter to "disconnect" the GPS and SIM module (which would probably disable the ECU right away) due the proprietary systems that must be "plugged in" with the mother-ship during regular service (otherwise it wouldn't let you reset an oil change alarm/service reminder, release ABS valves for fluid replacement, or recognize the new starter battery installed...) you don't even know what the ECU stores, and how much of it gets phoned home...
And it doesn't stop with cars, these days also motorcycles are "extremely curious"...

How to stop them?
Avoid their "new" products...
I'm happy with my '96 Toyota...
Friend of mine has a 2011 Dodge RAM, considered getting a new one, stumbled over above reports, cancelled the order... (macabre that he is in IT security... ;) )

All true. I am still going to try and opt out. Even when I was with the state patrol in 2004, the detectives could get an amazing amount of data out of the secret "flight recorder". Now, if a mic is hot in your car or phone, it listens to what you say.

Yeah... but despite "known issues" with essential infrastructure (see: Huawei and consorts...) our city administration is actually dense enough to "enrich" the fleet with vehicles by BYD...
Besides the obvious "surveillance" am I pretty positive that at the base a simple "push of a button" somewhere in China "disables" them all right on the spot...
