Oil changes are usually done by a combo of miles and time. My Subarus are 6 month or 6,000 miles to keep the extended warrenty up, for instance.

My VFR regrettably was left home last year during the two tours I took and I had planned on taking it on another but the fires and smoke killed the trip.

So here we are a year later and the oil and filter have 300 miles on them. The filter is a PITA to change.
The poor Vstrom only has 360 miles on the oil and filter.

I dont mind changing the oil on either but I am not gonna change the filters. Is the thinking about changing the oil run along the line of acid build up over time or ?.

The acid buildup you refer to only occurs when engine are only run for short periods and then shut off. If you run it long enough to reach operating temp for a while, the contaminates boil off causing no harm to the engine.

During the winter months, I try and find a few nice days to go ride and measure the oil temp after 20-30 minutes. My inclination since the VFR oil looks like new is to take it to Spearfish then change it when I get home. It is a hot running bike and has a digital readout for the coolant temp in F.

If you run it 20-30 minutes any acid created by combustion has been burned off.
