Wanted NT700V Motorbike

I just saw a silver one with only 1800 miles on it on FB marketplace in DFW area, but he wants $6K for it. It's pristine

A 15 year old bike with 1800 miles on it.. I would run away, if any fuel was left in it it would be a lot of work.

I'd rather have one with 60k miles on it...

It would be an interesting engineering study....So what goes bad over time since it is not used? Certainly, the entire brake system is suspect and if a bike has a hydrolic clutch, that system also. Possibly disimilar metal corrosion here and there....Fuel injectors.....even sensors....
And yet, we have the case of the Kee bird, a B29 that did an emergency landing in 1947 in Greenland. In 1995, at great expense, a team went up there with four new engines and props and tried to take off, but a jury rigged generator leaked fuel and caught the plane on fire.

Every single seal, O-ring, etc... hardens and seizes... attempts to start rips the frozen contact patches apart -> seepage & leaks...
Condensate and acid in sitting in the engine oil like forever...
Pitting/corrosion between rings and cylinder walls...
Gunk from dried out/crystalized fuel remains contaminate the entire system...
Depending on storage conditions/climate, rotted rubber lines and wiring, corroded electrical connections and contacts...
Rodent infestation, like nests in air filter/intake, gnawed wiring and lines...
At the baseline one could get a real gem, but should be prepared to do a complete rebuild... not as simple as "just throw a new battery and some fresh fuel in and go"...
 
Like some others on this forum, I've bought and sold a bunch of motorcycles across my riding life. In my experience a well-maintained but high mileage bike is less of a risk than a low-mileage but neglected one.

And then there is the matter of the aftermarket and desired accessories. Aside from the fact that adding all the desirable stuff is expensive, the US based aftermarket is slim for the NT700. Finding one that is already outfitted is a plus, at least in my thinking.

As it sits mine works well for me, but if I were shopping today, Phil's would be on my short list.

Its a great question. How can a crashed B29 sit on a frozen lake for 50 years and be made flyable with the replacement of its four engines and props and other crash repairs?

And how can planes sit under the desert sun at Davis Monthan and put back into the air after years?
For me, the question is mute as I wouldnt pic any NT700v...even a new one....with what else is available now. Vstrom 800 leftover with warrenty for $6700? Kawasaki is slashing prices on left overs also...up to $4,000 off.

Point taken. I've seen some talented guys do restoration jobs that turned an ugly duckling into a swan. That noted, I personally don't have the knowledge, talent, or the drive for that type project at my age.

Thanks for the word on the Kaws at big discounts. Maybe the discounts will bleed over into some other models ... like the X300's. I'll have to look into that at the local dealership.

My phone says yes, the X300 is discounted. $250 new but you can get a new 2023 for $4,600
