Hello everyone, first, this is a great site, tons of information and good stories.

I am a re-entry rider (kids came along, stopped riding, etc). I started back with a 2018 CB500X, in Jan, 2024, the NT700V I picked up in Jul, 2024. I have added only about 5,000 miles to the NT (a day ride for some guys on this forum??) about 20k miles right now, but I am spreading the miles over 3 bikes (I added a 2015 NC700X a few months ago).

The NT has a Honda trunk with the integrated lighting, factory heated grips (which I really like!), the Deauville nylon bags. The seller kept the lockable Honda cover, I didn't know this until after I handed him the money.

I really enjoy riding the NT, especially with decent tires back last October. I want to keep this bike and keep riding it, and put some more miles on it. I am working on securing the latches, after reading about them here. My "new guy" maintenance questions is regarding the crank position sensor. Does this fail based on age? Mileage? Both? Should I replace this before failure (I am thinking so based on what I'm reading here)?

Thanks for any replies, and, again, this is a great forum.

If your weezy about a failure, buy one and keep it in garage. I never had a failure on 2 NT700, one with 201,111 and 129,063 miles. But I did get a temporary not starting I think cause of this sensor. A few times happened at a gas station, just wouldn't start, cause of higher temp when filling tank. So it will just keep on cranking and not start cause computer thinks cam is off. Also closely related is the plug caps causing non starting. There was a recall on those, again I just happened to never have a problem with caps, and never replaced them.

Just ride it ! Failures can occur on any bike however, the NT is very trustworthy. Mine is at 102,000+ and the only minor failure so far was a spark plug cap which caused it to miss at slow speed and stall at stop lights. It has been across the country several times. If all goes well, it will be taking me into the New England states and Maine this summer. Enjoy the ride ! !

I wouldn't stress too much about the crank sensor although it is now a known issue to us. It mainly happens in hot weather or when the engine is running hot in stop and go traffic. In 140K miles, mine has never failed and left me stranded. After about a half hour cool down it will restart. If it starts to act up as the engine miss occurs at low speeds like traffic, once you get moving at highway speeds unless it's scorching hot the problem goes away. At about 100K miles I bought one and carried it as a spare. I finally replaced it not long ago just to be on the safe side. Few dealers (if any) stock many NT specific parts so I became my own parts dept. with levers, cables and crank sensor, just in case.

Welcome aboard!

Mike

PS what part of MO?

There are some nice two lane highways all around southeastern MO. I really enjoy the rides through the forest areas with the tree canopied roads, although I did have a close call with a wild turkey on the NT.

All throughout the Mark Twain National Forest area there are some great twisty, lightly traveled roads. Perhaps we can meet up sometime.

Sure, I'm around most of the time, if I'm not out on a bike.

I replaced my CpS when mine failed. Basically, its a fine coil of wire. If it opens up, there are no symptoms while you are riding. The computer has historical memory. Once it knows where the cam is and the crank is, the computer can start the bike and if only one sensor fails when the bike gets hot and under way, the computer remembers where the cam or crank was. Once the bike stops, it forgets and you have to wait till the bike cools for the the open to close and the bike will start. If you want to keep your NT as a pet, I would buy a spare while they are still available. Just remember to do all the other maintenance someone may or may not have down over the last 13 years.....did you say the bike has factory heated grips????????????????

I did order, and now have, a sensor just in case.

I am not positive, but I believe this bike was loaded with factory accessories: GPS mount on the clutch side (the seller took the actual bracket which holds the unit, left the integrated ball), wind screen extension (which the seller took off for his scooter), lockable Honda bike cover, heated grips, wind deflectors, and possibly the dry bag for the Honda trunk.

I wish I'd known a little more when I bought it, and I would have pressed for these things. As it was, I was sorta in a hurry, I liked the bike, it was a Honda, and, well, ...

No worries....Just remember, like I said, and this goes for anyone buying an NT or any old bike....look at the tire date, flush the coolant system, replace the brake and if need be the clutch fluid.

I double checked, and I don't believe this NT has factory heated grips, not sure why I thought so, except there is not any name/brand on anything.
