Kalifornia throws in the towel!

As the Professor told us in Engineering school in the late 1960's. The biggest problem facing us is over population. He was/is right. It does not matter how efficient we become if the demand (more people) surpasses it. Apparently no one watches nature films. Species populations self correct when they run out of food, conflict (predators) or disease reduces the population. Humans are different?
What we see as other problems are symptoms of the larger problem ... too many people.
So who do we eliminate first? And who decides?
Look at the history of failed population doomsday predictions. Malthus and his ilk are mistaken.

I feel sorry for the people who lost their homes and even lives in the Kalifornia fires. But what doesn’t make the news is that they built their homes in an area where fire is and has been part of the environment since pre-settlement times. Sure, humans have increased the ignition sources but the fact remains that they built their homes in an area where fire is a natural part of the ecosystem. And they did it without any effective fire prevention or fuel breaks. Sort of like not expecting flooding along the Mississippi or hurricanes on the Atlantic coast.

So, now the insurance companies will pay for the damage and raise their rates to cover the costs.
True story. They also need new building codes with fire breaks and vegitation control amoung the things implemented. This is not going away. And yes, the insurance companies are raising eveyone's rates.

Malthus lived during the very beginning of the industrial revolution and did not realize the effect that technology would have on his theory. The chicken littles of the world are generally foiled by mankind's ingenuity, Providence and blind assed luck. I remember in the 60's the CL's were predicting the demise of society due to "peak oil". It never happened because of new geologic finds and new methods of extraction. Now, once again the idea of peak oil is gaining acceptance again and sure enough the Russians have claimed to have discovered 551 billion barrels of recoverable oil in Antarctica. Whether we should attempt recovery of this resource is another question. Geologists have also discovered large quantities of hydrogen deep in the earth's upper mantle. At present we have no means of recovery but that's just another challenge for mankind. In my lifetime, I have seen numerous doomsday scenarios and predictions that had the public's fearful attention that have turned out to be much ado about nothing.

We have met the enemy, and he is us.....but as a species like any other, there will eventually be a self leveling effect. Countries can keep their populations constant if they wish, and not export their extra people to other countries....some even have a declining population "issue".
Anyone has the right to not believe climate change doessnt exist or at least man is not the total cause of it....But when I was born the US, a prosperous nation, had mostly one car per household.
Many nations had much fewer. Now we have many more house holds with many more cars per household.....plus lots more gas burning toys. And lots more power plants using fossil fuels.
I think there is a connection. If you are standing in a hole, stop digging. Quit enabling people production.

You dont have to eliminate. Attrition has worked in Japan. Yes, they have their problems due to that....but alot of pluses also. Dont enable people production. In your own country and around the world. If people are hungry in Starvationland, dont feed them willy nilly. You will just have twice as many starving people.

Most of the industrialized world is on the cusp of a demographic implosion. Many countries are already beyond recovery. That's not a good thing for anyone.

Coyote, you overlook one critical factor in your solution. Producing new people is great fun! I don't think you will find many volunteers to forego people production!

Its fun and a religeous requirement in some areas, but its also defacto discouraged in many areas, where birth control and other means are available. China has a rule that if you want to come from the countryside and work in the city factories, fine....but leave your kids home with grandma....they cant use our schools in cities. Those kids are now of age and are coming to cities to work and electing to NOT have children. The US population is increasing for certain reasons like people importation and other factors....but the birth rate in the US or the working class and rich is falling.

This is rather interesting. China now consumes 30 percent more coal than the rest of the world combined. There is a guy now worth 28 billion who developed a massive coal mine in Borneo and sells it to China, India, and the Phillepeans. Even the Swiss "based" company, Glencore, one of the West's largest miners, has decided to stay the course and make profits to make share holders happy. The Paris accords are worthless if people dont do what they say....I am sure many of you know the polution from China is felt in the US West coast. We all live in a fishbowl and there are too many fish and everyone is peeing......
