My Internet and that of 1,000 others in North Spokane County has been down for a day and a half. The company will only say they are working on it. FYI

I'm pretty old school when it comes to modern electronics. I still want the companies I do business with to send me paper bills since I don't really trust internet and such all that much.
Most are pretty good about sending me old school paper bills but one or two you can tell don't want to deal with USPS.

Arknt

I don't mind bills send as *.pdf by email, but say nay to all those "automatic withdrawal" requests that they all fancy in the past few years...
No access to my account if not absolutely required...
I'll sit down, do the 3D secure logon to my account, and enter all payments with the date they are due, not before...
Some, like our equivalent of your AAA, send their annual membership out like 3 months in advance, others like one month before; with "auto withdrawal" they'd charge me immediately... nah!

Los Alamos County has been installing a new waterline along a local road for the last three or four weeks and have been taking Xtra precautions to avoid hitting a fiber optic cable that is buried along the road. My internet has been down three times so far, they are almost done.

We have home internet from StraightTalk - 5G connection. Not the fastest, but plenty fast and has not been down once.

Did they install something that shoots to a cell tower? What do you pay and what is your download speed and do you have a data limit.

Well, say what you want about Elon Musk, but his Starlink internet just works. 100% No concerns about backhoes.
The original business model was doomed to failure but I heard they increased their price? Birds were dying too fast.... what do you pay and what is your guarantee that they will send you a new dish if yours breaks.

They send a small box which works as a hotspot - $99 for that. Park it near a window. It grabs Verizon cell data like a phone. Download speeds vary from 400 to 800 MBS. $40 a month - no data limits, no throttling.

GF (no landline or anything at her place) has a similar setup distributed/branded by a local food chain (Hofer/Aldi)...
An ALCATEL HoT WLAN-Router CAT 7 für € 79.99,- and a data SIM with a monthly fee of € 19.90,-...
Handles the PV Inverter/logger, 2 phones and two laptops without issues, even streaming movies via the BD player works...
No mentionable firewall though, but you could disable the onboard WLAN and patch your firewall router behind it
(like I run the DSL at my place as I don't trust the ISP provided modem/WLAN router further as I could trow it; onboard WLAN: disabled, config: NAT... a full grown DrayTec Vigor series handles my intranet...)

Wow! If we had a close cell tower, that would be great. We pay 75 bucks for 10 MBits/second. That is just enough to stream 2 shows at once. I have no idea what 400 Mbits/second would be like.

Its tough living in the middle of nowhere. Hughsnet has terrible latency....Starlink works...if you are close to a cell tower then you can glome onto that.
