Big Lids

I've had 0 problems with mine before and after dropping the bike. I even broke one screw putting them on so it's stuck in the hole or fell out long ago. Shut and open probably better than the little ones. Clearly a great buy if you don't run a topcase all the time. Seemed ridiculous to me they would make bags that didn't fit a helmet. I can put my full face helmet and tank bag in one side and pants and odd stuff in the other. Works like a charm.

Well David Silver Spares web site said they had 5 sets of silver in stock. So I ordered a set.

I have seen several post where people are having cracking issues with the latching connectors on the lids themselves. I am considering filling the area with epoxy right from day one to add additional support.

What does everyone think about the idea, and does anyone have a different/better idea?

I would just put an exterior backup latch on. I gently shut them in the middle with one hand or at each latch with 2 hands. I can't see how they would crack unless you really crammed it full and jammed it shut or use your knee to shut it. I would think if you're careful you will have little trouble.

I think it's a pretty good idea and may do something like that myself.

I think I will probably still fill with epoxy, but I remember you guys talking about adding latch's, and I think that is a good idea also.

Did anyone find a good low profile latch to put on the lids?

Please post pictures if you decide to go this route. Thanks.

Ordered my large lids on 4/18 and got a notice today that the scheduled delivery date is 4/24.

The small lids are a bit fiddly as well. They just want you to be gentle with them you can't treat them like a government mule. The way air flows through the rear bodywork and past the latch mechanisms, grit (dust of all sorts) can mix with the factory lube and bind it up. Wiping out the grease the factory put in and using a dry lube (or a product that sprays on and leaves a dry film) seems to work for me. The added space in the big lids is a big plus for me and worth any extra attention required.

Mine are black so I cut 3M reflective tape the size of the oval Dullville decal and put it on. Looks factory and is functional.

I like the little reflective oval better. I don't need to advertise what makes sense to nearly no one over here.

Hey guys,

Does anybody with the big lids swap between big and regular? I think big ones look a bit out of proportion but they seem very functional when travelling. Hence my idea to switch to bigger lids only when extra storage is needed.
How are those connections - would they technically allow many mountinc cycles or are they kind of "screw in the plastic" type of connection, which allow maybe two cycles of "un-screwing and screwing" and then falling appart?

PS - can't check my own bike yet, I'll get it from the dealer at the 2nd of may :)

Thanks,
S

I have shifted back and forth, about twice. But it's been because I was refinishing the big lids after scraping them up. I don't think they'll fall apart, but I also don't think you'd want to do it on a weekly basis.

I actually think the bike looks better proportioned with the big lids. To me, it looks more like a scooter with the little lids.

I have a feeling that my "little lids" will be living in the box the big ones came in in my shed for the rest of there lives. The extra space is something I use every day now. As to how they look, well they look like they can hold more. I am over that.

You would probably want to invest in a second set of latches and leave them screwed on to the lids. The mounting boss won't like getting taken apart that often.

I didn't think to mention that, but that is what I did. I agree that the mounting bosses are the weak link.
