Émile Leray’s story is a remarkable tale of resourcefulness, survival, and ingenuity. In 1993, the Frenchman—an experienced electrician and adventurer—was on a journey through the Moroccan desert in his Citroën 2CV, a small, iconic French car known for its simplicity and durability. During his trip, he encountered a remote, harsh stretch of the desert where his car broke down.
Stranded in an unforgiving environment with little chance of rescue and limited supplies, Leray faced a critical decision. Instead of waiting for help that might never come, he devised an extraordinary plan: to dismantle his broken car and build a motorcycle from its parts to escape.
Over the course of about 12 days, Leray worked tirelessly under the desert sun. Using tools he carried with him and his knowledge of mechanics, he repurposed the car’s components into a makeshift motorcycle. He used the 2CV’s chassis as the frame of the bike, attached its engine for power, and ingeniously modified other parts to complete the vehicle. He reportedly rationed his limited food and water supplies carefully to sustain himself during the process.
When the motorcycle was ready, Leray rode it out of the desert toward safety. The improvised machine wasn’t perfect—its performance was rough, and the journey was slow—but it worked well enough to get him to civilization. Along the way, he was stopped by Moroccan authorities, who were reportedly baffled by his contraption and fined him for operating an unregistered and modified vehicle. Despite this, Leray’s feat remains a symbol of human creativity and resilience in the face of adversity.
