Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday my fellow Dept of Navy brethren. Enjoy some Marine Birthday Candles, because... well we all know why.

My wife and I both served in the US Army. Gonna have breakfast at Denny's tomorrow!

Oh - Yes. Happy Birthday to Marines. I’ve got a few of them in my family as well as some friends.

I was an Army draftee. I qualified for OCS but opted out. I made buck sergeant while in Viet Nam (they were desperate for a platoon sgt.) That was a very memorable experience which was totally wrecked with my return home and the protesters. That’s why Veterans Day is impotent to me.

My best friend in Vietnam survived his wounds. We saved each other’s lives. But he later died of alcoholism which was PTSD induced. I wish every politician in office would have to spend a day in a VA Medical Center to see first hand SOME of the consequences of war. That might give them some perspective.

As a Veteran and manager of a Veteran Peer Support program for the past 10 years, although very recently retired, I want to wish all the veterans here a happy Veterans Day and to send you a heartfelt thank you for your service. I appreciate you all very much.

When the Marines took Guam and the Mariannas, Imperial Japan's death certificate was signed. Spend a few moments today thinking of those Marines. My Uncle was a Marine on Iwo.
Read Wiki on the battle for Guam.....about 1600 Marines died there, Total US forces in the assault, about 56,000.

Iwo Jima also worked as an effective landing strip for planes damaged in the raids over Japan. There were several hundred (maybe more?) planes that used that function after the Marines took that little piece of mostly volcanic rock.

Nimitz island hopping strategy was a stroke of genius. Rather than contest Japan for every square inch of turf they occupied, they picked strategic islands that would allow air campaigns against the home islands. The island hopping strategy was costly, but countless lives were saved vs a full-scale attack.
